3rd Annual May Day Celebration Ke Kai Ola

It's a day to come and dance the Hula!!! The 3rd Annual May Day Celebration, Ke Kai Ola. And a special fundraiser for Hālau I Ka Wēkiu. Presented by the Kauakoko Foundation, this is a celebration of all things Hawaiian from Music to hula! Featuring a range of special guests, Nā Kumu Hula Karl Veto Baker and Michael Lanakila Casupang along with singers Horace Dudoit, Louis “Moon” Kauakahi, and Kama Hopkins!

So, for a very Hawaiian night out, come to the Waikiki Shell on Wednesday, May 1st 2024 for The 3rd Annual May Day Celebration, Ke Kai Ola. It's got music, it's got Hula, it's got decades of heritage and tradition, and it's got fun in a warm and friendly setting!!!

The Director of Kumu Hula, Michael Lanakila Casupang, runs Pūpūkahi I Ke Alo O Nā Pua which is Mid-Pacific’s hula hālau. Students in grades 9 through 12 involved in the hula classes are considered part of Pūpūkahi and learn the language, traditions and crafts of Hawai‘i. Both Casupang, and Karl Veto Baker conduct hula classes, and their Halau I Ka Wekiu has won numerous awards at the Merrie Monarch Festival and at various hula competitions on different islands, and has travelled as far as New Zealand and Japan.

Hālau I Ka Wēkiu was founded in 1998, and is a Hula school located in Pauoa, Oʻahu, with a traditional Hula genealogy dating back a staggering eight generations to the island of Kauaʻi. The Kumu Hula Karl Veto Baker and Michael Lanakila Casupang also compose and play Hawaiian music. This peaceful school offers visitors a chance to experience of Hawaiian culture, and delve into the rich heritage of the islands in a warm and friendly setting.

Musician, singer, producer, and member of Ho’okena, Horace Dudoit and the group he formed in 1986, have produced multiple Grammy nominated albums, including Ho’okena’s newest album, Ho’okena 3.0.

Louis “Moon” Kauakahi has been at the center of the band, The Mākaha Sons of Niʻihau, as both composer and guitarist, through lineup changes and tragedies. Together, they have produced nearly two-dozen albums, and he retired from the band in 2014, having been a part of it for almost 4 decades.

Kama Hopkins is the Trust Services Manager for the King Lunalilo Trust by day. But at night, he transforms into his alter ego, a singer and songwriter of Hawaiian music with multi Nā Hōkū Hanohano awards and a member of the talented Hawaiian music groups Māhiehie IV and Kāneʻohe as the ‘ukulele bass player.
