Fall in love with the artistic youth of 19th century Paris this April 26th as the Hawaii Opera Theatre presents its Mainstage Season's final offering, La Bohème, at the Waikiki Shell! Directed by Kyle Lang, this revival of Giacomo Puccini’s four-act opera will breathe life into the libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, with Maestro Dane Lam to conduct. Behold the Bohemian lives led by Mimi (Emily Michiko Jensen), a struggling seamstress, and her friends as they navigate Parisian society in 2 ½ hours of romantic affairs, ambitious passion, and soul-shaping sorrows. An all-Asian principal cast of opera’s most distinguished stars will lend their voices to classic arias such as “Che gelida manina” and “O soave fanciulla,” faithfully performed in the original Italian, with English titles superimposed. A romantic saga in four acts, La Bohème was composed by the legendary Giacomo Puccini to a libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. Follow the Bohemian life of an impoverished seamstress, her friends, and their struggles as they bound back and forth in the pursuit of love and art. Evocatively captured by a lush score, which features rousing arias such as “Che gelida manina” and “O soave fanciulla,” this opera Obra Maestra will take your breath away with its resounding portrayal of Parisian life, the passions of youth, and the heartbreaking sorrows that challenge conviction and camaraderie.
On his second directorial foray into La Bohème, Kyle Lang arranges a timely revival of the late 19th-century gem, featuring Hawai'i Symphony Orchestra Music Director Dane Lam at the podium. Principal characters, meanwhile, showcase the critically acclaimed talents of an all-Asian cast, several of whom will be celebrating their Hawaii Opera Theatre debut.
