All of us here at The Tom Moffat Waikiki Shell here in Honolulu are so excited to welcome you to our May Day Is Lei Day Celebrations right here on Oahu for what is sure to be our best May Day celebration yet. Filled with love, tradition, and lots of flowers - the event will start at 7PM on May 1st, and follows an entire day of celebrations around the island! So make sure to be here on time! Ready to see some of the best performances the island has to offer and a whole lot more.
The evening here at Waikiki will feature hula schools and hula competitions, lei making competitions, guests musicians from all across the island, and lots of ukulele and Hawaiian reggae sounds. Started in 1929 to celebrate our culture and all that comes from it, each specific island has a different lei and flower color to wear - Big Islanders wear red, Maui’s is pink, Molokai uses green, Lanai is orange, Kahoolawe gray, Kauai shows out with the purple ones, Niihau in white, and we wear yellow (theʻIlima flower) here on Oahu, the flower of our island. But don’t worry if you come wearing a different island’s flower on the day of - we won’t judge!
May Day is Lei Day is all about expressing the unspoken language of Aloha - expressing love, greeting in the official summer season, joy, and hope for the future as well as good luck for the times ahead. Though the lei only lasts for a few days, the feelings and the good vibes brought during the holiday last forever - or at least until the next May Day! And, make sure you follow all the rules of Lei Day: Always wear the lei over your shoulders, do NOT remove your lei while around the person who gave it to you, never refuse a lei, and oh yeah - always wear a smile while having yours on, too!
This year’s Lei Day is set to bring on a wide array of visitors, activities, and experiences that you just can’t miss. The fragrant flowers and the breezes from the ocean will be amazing, yes, but even more amazing is being able to spend the day with your loved ones - and us, too! Grab your tickets today, and don’t come alone either. And most importantly, get ready to experience all that Lei Day is about. We’ll see you soon!
